Mr. Hellams practices in the areas of estate planning and taxation, elder law, trust and probate administration, real estate, business succession planning, fiduciary litigation, supplemental needs trusts, asset protection, and guardianships and conservatorships.

He regularly works with clients on estate planning matters in the formulation and implementation of strategies to reduce transfer taxation, protect and preserve assets, and facilitate the transfer of assets among family members. Additionally, Mr. Hellams advises clients on life insurance, long-term care planning, and retirement benefits planning.

Mr. Hellams advises personal representatives, corporate and individual trustees, and beneficiaries on all phases of the estate and trust administration process, including the preparation of fiduciary and federal and state estate tax returns.

Mr. Hellams has an active practice advising and counseling families with disabled family members including preparation of supplemental needs trusts and life care planning. He also works with personal injury attorneys relative to planning for clients who have suffered injuries. This includes advising attorneys on supplemental needs trusts, Medicare Set-Aside Arrangements, and public benefits planning. Mr. Hellams is also an accredited attorney for the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of claims for veterans benefits before the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Mr. Hellams is a frequent speaker on estate planning and elder law topics and has given presentations to government agencies including the FDIC, local community groups, and professional organizations.

Mr. Hellams currently serves on the Young Attorneys Steering Committee for the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.

Mr. Hellams is licensed to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland, South Carolina, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court.
